Before joining NJROTC, Diego Vega’s life felt predictable and repetitive. Most of his days were spent going to school and occasionally hanging out with friends, but nothing stood out as exciting or meaningful. He didn’t feel like he was growing much as a person during that time.

That all began to shift on March 7, 2025, a day Vega now sees as a turning point. Something about that day felt different from the start. “I actually started talking to more people, and I had a lot of fun that day,” Vega said.

Instead of staying quiet or keeping to himself, he opened up socially. He found that being present and enjoying the moment made everything feel more exciting. Through NJROTC, Vega continued to build on that experience.

Through NJROTC, Vega became more social and confident, learning to focus less on overthinking and more on enjoying what was happening around him. Although he struggled with “FOMO” and sometimes felt frustrated about missing out on other activities, he began to understand that those sacrifices were part of something bigger. The program taught him important lessons about responsibility, maturity, and handling both winning and losing.

He explains that he stopped overthinking and focused more on what was happening around him. This helped him feel more confident and comfortable in different situations. However, the transition into this new lifestyle wasn’t always easy.

Over time, Vega became a happier and more motivated person, building strong friendships and finding a sense of belonging. He now sees how much he has changed and recognizes that stepping out of his comfort zone made a big difference in his life. For Vega, NJROTC wasn’t just another activity, but an experience that helped him grow and become a better person.

NJROTC also taught him important lessons about winning and losing. Instead of getting discouraged, he learned to see challenges as opportunities to improve. This shift in thinking made a big difference in his attitude.

Looking back, Vega can clearly see how much he has changed. What started as a single day of stepping out of his comfort zone turned into something much greater. “It has made me a more mature and happier guy,” Vega said.
