AVID grade checks help students stay on track

By Natalie Galeno

Every Thursday, students in AVID 12 at Rialto High School complete a grade check to monitor their academic progress and stay on track for graduation.

AVID teacher Patrick Kimmons uses this time to review students' grades and ensure they meet requirements.

The grade check allows both students and their teacher to understand what is happening in each class. By reviewing grades together, teachers can identify which students may need extra help or support. Students are expected to take responsibility by reaching out to their teachers if their grades are low. This process encourages accountability and helps students build strong academic habits.

“If students have below a 73% in an A-G course, they are required to attend tutoring,” said Patrick Kimmons. Students will not receive full credit for their grade check until the tutoring is completed. Many low grades are caused by late projects or low test scores, which can be improved by attending tutoring or meeting with teachers after school. This policy encourages students to improve their grades and stay focused on their goals.

Some students say grade checks help them stay aware of their academic progress and responsibilities. “I don’t mind grade checks, and I do like having them every two weeks, because it's a good way to look at my grades and stay updated,” Stacy Morales said, a student in AVID 12. Morales explains that regularly reviewing grades helps many students understand where they stand in their classes. This can also give students more opportunities to improve their grades before they get worse.

Other students believe there are ways in which the system could be improved. “Something I would change about the grade check system is to change the day, because if I do it on a Thursday and I miss a teacher, then I don't have time to redo it because I have 2nd period AVID,” said Arianna Hernandez, also a student from AVID 12. Hernandez explained that timing can make it a little difficult for some students to get their signatures. Even with this challenge, the grade check can still help many students stay aware of their academic progress and be more responsible.

Staff believe grade checks can help students stay mindful of deadlines and progress towards their goals. Students who do not complete grade checks often fall behind on assignments, and they may even be removed from AVID. By reviewing grades weekly, students stay organized and motivated. Overall, the system helps prepare them for graduation and future success.
