The Journey Into The Other World

“Coraline” is a visually amazing and chilling animated film that takes viewers into a world where reality and fantasy mix. Directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman’s novella, this film combines curiosity and suspense, keeping the audience hooked from start to finish. This year marks the 15th anniversary of its release.

Coraline Jones (the main character) is a curious and adventurous girl who feels ignored by her busy parents after they move to a new home. Coraline discovers that the perfect world has dark secrets, which might be predictable because they fit into everyday storytelling. However, later on, she finds a hidden door in her apartment that leads to a perfect world where her  “other” parents care, the food is tasty, and everything seems wonderful. Still, this perfect world has dark secrets, and Coraline must be smart and brave to escape and save her real family.

In "Coraline," the three ghost children each represent the dangers of the Other World. Mitch, Lydia, and Charlie were lured by the Other Mother and trapped forever. They share their tragic stories with Coraline, warning her about the manipulative nature of the Other Mother and urging her to escape before she meets the same fate. Their experiences highlight the importance of valuing one's real family and reality.

What I like about the film is how amazing it looks. The motion animation makes it feel special and real in a way that computer animation often doesn’t. For example, the garden scene in the “other” world is incredibly creative, with flowers blooming into fantastic shapes. Also, the use of different colors to show the difference between the real world and the “other” world, being bright and colorful compared to the dull colors of the real world.

In terms of filmmaking techniques, the lighting and music significantly enhance the film's atmosphere. The eerie lighting creates a sense of unease, while the haunting score complements the suspenseful moments. The camera angles effectively capture Coraline's emotions and the surreal nature of the alternate world, immersing the viewer in her journey.

Henry Selick beautifully created the Coraline movie. His iconic sounds and horrifying display brought the eerie world to life. The stop-motion animation is stunning, and the attention to detail makes every scene captivating. Plus, the story's exploration of themes of bravery and the importance of family adds depth to the creepy atmosphere. It's a unique blend of beauty and horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The overall message of the movie is to never wish for a better life than you are already given. Coraline wished for a life that always prioritized her, but later on, she regretted it and put her real parents in life-threatening danger. Even though she successfully saves her parents, she realizes that maybe a world where she gets everything her way is not the best option and that she should just live with her life the way it has always been.

"Coraline" is a beautiful and interesting film that mixes fantasy and horror. Even though some parts are a bit slow and might be too scary for younger kids (tell me about it), the strong characters and spooky story make it memorable and exciting. If you like dark fantasy and amazing animation, "Coraline" will stick with you.
